Notes ID: 36; An entertaingly written case study, the article describes and comments on the failed experiment of Jay Chiat, head of a famous and successful US advertising agency, to turn his business into a paperless office (1993-98). There is no quantitative evidence, but Berger draws on many amployees' comments, and, though rather critical, does justice to Chiat's original ideas. The article raises questions about territorialism, about the connection between personal lifestyle and work style, and about change management. For those sceptical about abandoning individual offices the Chiat Day case has become one of the archetypical examples. Meanwhile a UK based Chiat Day spin-off, St Lukes, as become a flagship of the creative office environment and recently earned the accolade in HBR, of $the most frightening company on earth $(Couto, 2000).$ $$ $
