| Notes | ID: LEAMAN1995A; This paper produces statistical evidence suggesting that people who are dissatisfied with the indoor environmental conditions are more likely to also say that this affects their productivity at work. It contains analysis of peoples' dissatisfaction with their working environment. Environmental issues considered are temperature, lighting, noise, air quality, comfort. One of the key findings from the analysis is that peoples perception of their ability to control their own working environment is important. An interesting concept put forward with graphical evidence is $"forgiveness".$ This relates to how forgiving the occupants are of the short comings of the building. The $"forgiveness"$ can be increased if the occupants $"know that every effort is made to overcome them, and they will usually tolerate problems which they understand are hard to solve"$.p150 The paper concludes that the $"best" $buildings have the following features: -Rapid response to triggers of change -Organisations have enough management resources to deal with adverse or unpredictable consequences -Buildings are comfortable for occupants most of the time -Physical and managerial systems are integrated at all life-cylce stages (especially briefing, design, commissioning and use) -Buildings are economical of time in operation for all user groups - Noise and excessive waste kept to a minimum$$ $$ |
