| Publication year | 1993 |
| Notes | ID: DUFFY1993; Reports the research conducted by BRE and DEGW into a range of offices in 1990/91 and contains papers on related issues from a range of contributors. Ultimately from the wealth of data there is a lack of synthesis and no suggestions as to business benefits. Arguably what we know, or what has reached the minds of mainstream organisational theorists / advisers some years later has not advanced. More likely to be studied by students / researchers than practitioners seeking a breakthrough. The papers range in scope from the changing nature of work, users expectations to measuring the performance of the building. Relevent chapters are: $User Expectations$ $by Adrian Leaman. $This chapter explores how the occupiers behaviour can be constrained by the inappropriate building decisions relating to workplace location, site, building shell, services and setting of the office. $Changing business: post-Fordism and the workplace$. $by Andrew Laing. $This chapter presents a case for a more flexible and diverse way of working. Changing work patterns are discussed in detail and thier ramifications for the workplace. The main thrust of post-Fordism is flexibility. Laing argues that flexibility is the way to productivity. $"If the productive potential of the post-Fordist enterprise is to be fully realized, the workplace should be designed to allow flexibility of response to the market that is demanded by competition." p41 $ |
