| Notes | ID: DUFFY1993A; An edited collection of Duffy's work from the late 1960's onwards, culminating in the lament, and claim, that the UK boom of the 80s imported largely Americain inspired office design practice with external architectural features emphasised rather than the perceived creativity of internal design which Duffy attributes to Northern European influence. More likely to interest the researcher than the practioner. 0f most enduring interest to the latter may be Duffy's original PhD research. The book is chronologically structured and debates the changing workplace over a 25 year period and includes the claimed demise of Taylorism in the workplace (cf Baldry et al. 1998 for the argument of neo Taylorism) to the rise and fall of Burolandshaft as a means of opening up the office environment. There is one other significant chapter: The first, relates to need for more useful research into office design. Duffy makes a valid point by calling for the research to be "$conducted from a user people-based perspective." p.37. $Duffy make the connection between the environment, productivity and people. $"Productivity is now much more a live issue but has taken two factors to make it so: an almost total change in the nature of work and much greater interest in the need to attract, retain and motivate highly able and creative people. p 37 $This type of research, i.e. human behaviour and their working environment, requires a combination of social science and architecture. $ $ |
