| Notes | ID: BECKER1995; Franklin Becker remains one of the founding pillars of the new workplace design movement. His approach blending organisational ecology, emergent behaviour and informal communication resonates (as would be expected they share some common roots) with the emerging field of complex systems research and the benefits claimed include dramatic shortening of product development times (Chrysler Neon). Sadly perhaps Becker and Steel underestimate the impact of culture (Chiat Day are highlighted as a pioneer - c.f. Berger (1999). The closing sentences make a point that has perhaps been proved by subsequent high profile failures: $If you have good notions about how ways of working need to change, these will have a big return for a modest investment. If you don't have such concepts spending major dollars on a totally new work setting carries the risk of not making much practical difference in the long run. $$$ $$ |
